Not as easy as it sounds right? I get it. I'm 21, without a degree, currently working an unpaid internship in hopes that just maybe I'll get the 3 to 5 years experience, required on job applications, in the next 2 months I have to spare. I mean, rent doesn't pay itself.
So what can we both do to put our minds at ease? Well, I have just 3 steps to my unemployment plan before all hell breaks loose.
Step 1: Panic!
I'm kidding, although there is no doubt your heart will drop when you find out you have less than thirty days to get a job to keep the roof over your head and food in your three-legged cats belly. However, losing your mind won't help at all. So, pull out that company laptop while you still can and get to work on your resume! Dust it off and add all the skills and experience you've gained. Ask superiors and colleagues for references, and start sending it out. Search online for jobs and don't stop until your fingers ache. Remember, businesses can sort through hundreds of resumes before selecting a successful candidate, so make your resume stand out.
Step 2: See a recruiter
Although sending out a hundred resumes may seem promising, seek professional assistance. Recruiters will be able to evaluate your skills and market them to companies. Remember to sell yourself to your recruiter. Being confident about your abilities and your knowledge will only raise their confidence in you as a candidate. After seeing your recruiter, don't leave it all on their shoulders! Continue your job search and send any job links you find interesting and appealing through to them. Help them - help you!
Step 3: Be patient
Although you may feel the waiting process is taking too long, remember the amount of resumes there are to consider. It may take a few weeks to reach your resume among all the other applicants. Don't let the wait drive you insane, and if you're really desperate, you could always pick up a few shifts at the bar you've been drowning your unemployed sorrows at. Whatever you decide to do, try to stay positive about your search for a job. After all, all good things come to those who wait, right?
I hope by now, you've had a good giggle or two with me, and if you are looking for a job... So am I! I'll send you my resume right away.
